Chirality Flashcards
1
Q
chiral
A
- molecule contains 4 unique groups
- NOT symmetrical
- contains no double bonds
- examples: hand or screw
2
Q
achiral
A
- molecule has two or more groups that are the same
- contains symmetry
- may contain a double bond
- examples: nail or pencil
3
Q
2^n
A
how to find the maximum number of stereoisomers, where n=number of chirality centers
4
Q
superimposable
A
when objects are identical and have multiple ways of orientation to stack them and they still look identical
5
Q
enantiomers
A
- non-superimposable
- they are mirror images
- molecule arrangement is the complete opposite of each other
- have identical physical properties (like melting/boiling/density)
- have different chemical properties (like toxicity/taste/smell)
- will rotate light in opposite directions
6
Q
diastereomers
A
- non-superimposable
- non-mirror images
- contain some parts of identical arrangement and contain some parts of different arrangement
