Rituals, etiquette- the outward expression, being good person
- We do rituals because we have a sense of loving kindness

Jen
Humanity, humane-inward expression
- really hard/impossible to have Jen all the time, hard to have loving kindness and motivation all the time
- (both) reinforce the 5 basic relationships
- (both) tools to develop into ‘superior’ human beings
Yin and Yang
Balance of nature
Yin: negative force/ black/ earth/ female
Yang: positive force/ white/ sun/ male
Common characteristics of Chinese religions
Developed in isolation>resemble each other but not other religions

- focus on ethics and not existence of deity
- divination- unity of the universe allows future events to be predicted in the future (known as religious people, looking at shapes and patterns and then determining (predicting) the patterns in the future)

Filial Piety
Devotion to parents and family, even honoring the parent’s memory after death
Analects of Confucianism
Collection of teachings of Confucius
5 basic relationships
- father to son *necessary for social harmony
- Elder brother to younger brother
- Husband to wife
- Elder to junior *subordinate person defers to and learns from superior
- Rulers to subject *superior person cares for the subordinate person
Reciprocity
Giving the same amount that you are getting back in a relationship
Education
Essential to developing a persons character
Daoism
No specific body of doctrines or rituals >loosely defined religion
- Sacred book is Tao Te Ching
- Founder is Lao-tuz
Teachings of Daoism
Dao is the universal force ( the basic unity)
Life is the greatest of all possessions (Dao-nature will destroy everything, so just focus on life)
Live is to be lived simply
Glory and pomp (extravagance) is to be despised
Legalism- realists
No specific teacher
Believed the chaos at the time demanded a strong government
Humans are too lazy to make decisions for themselves, they need the government to make decisions for them
No room for religion (philosophy instead)
