Enlightenment
The stage before nirvana. wisdom, a state of perfect understanding about the basic truths of the universe
Eightfold Path (Middle Way)
Describes what Buddhists regard as a religious life.
Wisdom-right knowledge, right thinking
Morality- right speech, right conduct, right livelihood
Meditation- right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration

Mahayana
1 of the 2 wings of Buddhism Liberal -the great vehicle -accepts fresh and expansive interpretations of the Buddhist concept -umbrella body for many schools
Buddhism
The religion based on the Buddha’s beliefs and realizations about the universe.
Nirvana
The release from pain and suffering in the world.
When released from dukkha (pain)
The stage after enlightenment
(Ends reincarnation. Can get to nirvana by following the eightfold path)
Theravada
The only remaining school in the Hinayana (conservation) wing (1 of the 2 wings of Buddhism)
- teaching of the elders
- closest to teaching of the Buddha
Four Noble Truths
The four main ideas to reach enlightenment
- Life is suffering
- Suffering is due to attachment
- Attachment can be overcome
- There is a path for accomplishing this (eightfold path)
Dharma
The teachings of the Buddha
Zen
Mediation - focuses on mindfulness ( being mindful of your present state)
- to achieve vigilance and self discovery
- living moment to moment
- popular en Southern Asia and in particular, Japan
Buddha
The enlightened one, the teacher (Siddhartha)
Sangha
The community- the 1 community that surrounded Buddha/ any Buddhist is part of sangha (different theories)

The Five Precepts
The minimum obligations for monks and laypeople. They also answer the question “What should I do to lead a good life and to achieve liberation from rebirth?”
- do not kill anything
- don’t steal
- don’t engage in sexual misconduct
- don’t lie or gossip: practice loving speech an active listening
- don’t use alcohol or drugs
