Language techniques
-Slips into present tense to show her thoughts at the time
‘Is it possible? Am I dreaming?’
-Use of repetition/imperative by her father
‘sit down! sit down!’ Commanding tone, indicating impatience/vigour. Exclamation mark highlights demand
-Rhetorical questions to show writer’s doubt and tension:
‘Is this a giant ruse on his part to trick me?’ Shows that she is accustomed to her father’s cruel/ insensitive behaviour
-As well as surprise and joy, ‘am I dreaming?’
- Use of punctuation and short sentences:
- increase tension, emphasises emotion, develops thoughts and feelings of characters
- Starts in the past tense, moves through present tense and ends with past tense
- adds immediacy
-Figurative language, use of similes
‘…like a persistent toothache’ coveys her worry
‘like entering heaven’ expresses her joy
