Chinas One Child Policy Flashcards
What was the policy?
Families in China were encouraged to only have one child
Why was it introduced?
To slow down population growth and reach the replacement rate
What are some of the successes of China’s one child policy?
Population would have been over 1.4 billion without it, better health care for pregnant women, a care for girls policy
Any failures of the policy?
Population doubled in 30 years, no economic growth or social stabilities, female infanticide and gender imbalance
Any impacts of the policy?
Harsh punishments for families with more than one child, forced abortions, bribery but free contraception was also offered, bare branches
What are bare branches?
Men who don’t marry and this often occurred in China because there was a huge gender imbalance meaning most men couldn’t marry
