What is the Period of Disunion?
The time of Disorder that followed the collapse of the Han is called this. This lasted from 220 to 589. Blending of culture took place along with wars. Nomadic culture blended in with northern China culture and Northern China culture blended in with Southern China culture.
What is the Grand Canal?
During the Sui dynasty reign from 589 to 618 its leaders began this. It is a canal linking northern and southern China.
Who is Empress Wu?
She was the only ruler that was a woman and ruled in the Tang dynasty.
What is Porcelain?
During the Song dynasty, this was created which is a thin, beautiful type of pottery.
What is Woodblock Printing?
An invention that built on Cai Lun’s achievement to make a form of printing in which an entire page is carved into a block of wood. This was made in the Tang dynasty. Cai Lun invented paper in the year 105 during the Han dynasty.
What is Gunpowder?
This was an invention of the Tang which is a mixture of powder used in guns and explosives. Originally it was used for fireworks but was later used in bombs and rockets.
What is the Compass?
This was an invention of the Tang which uses the earth’s magnetic field to show direction.
What is a Bureaucracy?
This is a body of unelected government officials.
What is Civil Service?
This is service as a government official.
What is Scholar-official”?
They are an educated member of the government.
Who was Ghengis Khan?
In 1206, he a powerful leader, khan, united the Mongols which used to be separate tribes in the plains of North China. He was also called Temujin. His name means “Universal Ruler”. Due to him organizing the Mongols, he was able to conquer much of Asia. He invaded Northern China in 1211 and by the time of his death of 1227 all of Northern China was under Mongol rule.
Who was Kublai Khan?
In 1260, he, Ghengis Khan’s grandson, became the ruler of the Mongol Empire. He defeated China and named himself emperor of China in 1279. This began the Yuan dynasty.
Who was Zheng He?
During the Ming dynasty he was considered the greatest sailor of the period. Between 1405 and 1433 he led 7 voyages around Asia. The fleets were huge. One fleet had 60 ships, 25,000 sailors, and some of the ships were more than 300 feet long. When he landed, he presented gifts to the leaders, boasted about China, and encourage people to give gifts to the Chinese Emperor. During one of his voyages he brought representatives of 30 nations and goods.
What is Isolatianism?
This is a policy of avoiding contact with other countries.
