Q

Why does China use military power to achieve economic prosperity (+ national security) in the South China Sea?

A

Claims on Spratley and Paracel islands based on the nine-dash line. 2016 decision in PCA, 9 dash line proven to be unlawful and contradicting UNCLOS, where states have sovereignty over 200 nautical miles from the coast.

Islands are important for China’s trade, and contain large reserves of oil and gas. China is worried about US influence and militarisation lending to other states in the Sea.

Q

How is the situation in the South China Sea demonstrating China’s hard/military power?

A

By making claims, China is using force to coerce others to leave the territories so China can claim land. Furthermore, by acquiring these islands, China is able to appear stronger with a larger territory, exerting more influence and having a larger arsenal to utilise its military. Additionally, by doing so, China can utilise the militarised islands to threaten other states which may challenge such claims, instilling a threat of intervention in China’s plans.
