- GDP is at $15.66 trillion
What is the global importance of China?
- Part of the World Trade Organisation increasing the development of the market economy
- One of the most commonly spoken languages in the world
- North Koreas closest trading partner
- Largest trading nation in the world with over 40% of goods exported
Who was Mao Zedong?
- A communist leader who grew the economy in the means of agriculture
- Caused a famine where around 15 million died
- Agriculture meant GDP was limited
Who was Deng Xiaoping and what was his policies?
- Leader of China in the 70’s
- Open-door Policy to attract Foreign Direct Investors
- Dedicated cities as Special Economic Zones which if people invested in and moved factories there import and export tariffs would be lower
Why is it called the workshop of the world?
- SEZ’s mean there is a lot of investment
- Cheap Labour
- Space to build
- 136.3 billion dollars of investment each year
What is a TNC?
- Transnational Corporations
- Any Company operating in more than one country
How have TNC’s changed the economy?
- Hardly any primary industry
- Mostly a growth in tertiary industries and still manufacturing
How many manufacturing workers are there in China?
215 million
What role do TNC’s play?
- 128 American TNC’s in China
- All TNC’s that are Chinese are all state-owned
- Lots of employment and GDP generated
Positive effects of Disney as a TNC?
- Employment means people are getting a huge boost especially migrant workers
- Peoples health have improved and children may get an education
Negative effects of Disney as a TNC?
- Poor wages for workers (Fraction of what the product is worth)
- Poor working conditions in sweatshops ways
What relationships does China maintain with other countries?
- Afghanistan- China is continuing to supply afghan government with everything they need
- UK-Lots of exports and imports of cheap goods
- USA-Trade battle with China where they complain about trade problems
- Russia-Stable trade relationship manufacturing chemicals and machinery
