- Chinese society preferred boys and so girls were abandoned
• In 2020, men in china will outnumber women by 30 mil - A Chinese child will have 2 parents and four grandparents to look after, there will not be enough old peoples homes

Economic Impacts
A
- China’s population is ageing - 22% of Shanghai’s residents are over 60 and this is expected to 34% by 2020. The economic costs of supporting them in old age will include expensive healthcare
- China’s economy won’t have enough workers to keep it expanding
- There won’t be enough people working to pay for the elderly

Why did China need a policy?
A
- China wouldn’t have enough food or water to feed such a large population
- The country would struggle to produce enough energy for such a large population
