Describe how China is shifting away from coals

A
  • China burn half the world coal and produce the most greenhouse gas
  • Coal burning peaked in 2011. After that China has been shifting towards more efficiency, more renewable energy, and more service oriented economy which require less energy.
  • Coal usage should continue to decrease in China.

Describe China National Tobacco Corps

A
  • Largest tobacco company in the world. No competition in China. Makes 40% of all cigarettes in the world
  • Owner is Chinese government. Makes up 7% of Chinese government revenue.
  • Although owned by government, government is recently reforming tobacco usage in China
  • Company started in 1982 to combat tobacco in black market. Main man is Tien-chioh Tso,tobacco researcher in US who went back to China to help the effort
  • Initially, sales of China National tobacco was local to each area. Reforms made it so that national brands can develop.
    Chungwa experience store north of Shanghai is like Apple store for tobacco. It has lots iof tobacco from chinese national tobacco corps.
  • The smoking regulators in China are basically the same people as tobacco company. They work closely to develop warning labels that fade into background, etc, so it’s not effective.

Describe the professional fraudbusters in China

A
  • China ha recently enacted new laws allowing class actin law suits and compensation between three to ten times the cost of faulty products
  • This led to the rise of professional fraudbusters, people who go around finding faulty products for a living.
  • next few years will likely be good for fraudbusters. Law is maturing, but companies haven’t catch up
