Children behind on vaccines or having unknown vaccination record–managing Flashcards
Where can the standard vaccine schedule be found
CDC.gov/vaccines/schedules
Where can the catch-up immunization schedule be found?
CDC.gov/vaccines/scheduled/HCP/IMZ/catch-up.html
If the child is behind on immunization is it necessary to restart the series?
No it is not necessary.
How quickly should vaccines be caught up
The minimum recommended intervals between doses for specific vaccines.
What are the minimum intervals for the pneumococcal and Haemophilus influenza type b vaccines and which one requires at least 1 dose after 12 months of age?
4 weeks; Haemophilus influenza type b
What is the minimum interval for DTP-containing vaccines and for dose 4 and dose 5?
The minimum interval is 4 weeks. Dose 4 must be given at least 6 months after dose 3 and dose 5 must be given at least 6 months after dose 4 and between 4 and 6 years of age. Tdap is given at 11 to 12 years
What is the minimum interval for polio vaccine, except for the last dose
Minimum interval is 4 weeks except the last dose should be given at least 6 months after the previous dose
What are recommendations for a child with no vaccine records available? What is also a reasonable alternative?
CDC generally recommends revaccination. A reasonable alternative is serologic testing for the presence of antibodies, protective antibody levels are greater than 0.1 international units/mL.
When doing serologic testing in children greater than 5 months of age what immunoglobulins tested and what titers are obtained?
Ig G antibodies for
1. diphtheria antibody
2. Tetanus antibody
3. Hepatitis B surface antibody
4. H influenza type B
When doing serologic testing in children greater than or equal to 12 months of age what antibody should be tested and what specific titers?
IgG antibodies for
1. Rubella
2. Mumps
3. Rubeola
4. Varicella
5. Hepatitis A
