Normalization

- Normal lifestyles are possible for people with disability
- normalization and social role valourization are the same.
- normalization takes support, training and planning
- highest goal of normalization was creation, defence and support of valued social roles for people with disability
Being seen as Deviant Others
- devalued people being treated badly
- how someone is treated by others determines how they behave
Two Pronged Action Strategy
- reduce the differences/stigmatize characteristics which devalue person in eyes of others
- change societal perceptions and values, that those characteristics no longer seen as devient
Mastery Climate
Task orientated individual: Individuals see improvement as ability. referential and dependant on growth.
these individuals are more likely to persist when they encounter failure.
Performance Climate
Ego orientated individual:
- Ability is perceived in capacity
- Ability demonstrated by outperforming others
- High effort means low ability
- More likely to withdraw when encounter failure
Physical self concept
Perception individual has of themselves
- Multidimensional domain of self concept
- both evaluative and descriptive
Ableism
Emulate abliest regular norms results in network of beliefs, processes and practices that cast disability as a diminished state of being. notion of normative or the normal individual
Disablism
Social oppression, social imposition on restrictions of activity for people with impairments.
Specialized Sport
Formerly segregated sport
-choice for those who want comfortable environment based on their goals, needs and abilities
Integrated sport
individuals with disabilities and individuals who are able bodied participate in the same setting.
