Varicella zoster
Air droplet spread
Chicken pox … dorsal root ganglion … herpes zoster
Rash: trunk»periphery (centripetal distribution)
Vesicular, cropping phenomenon
Rx: Symptomatic
Antiviral in immunocompromised/infant (high risk of comlications)
Chicken pox complications
- Bacterial infection of rash
- Viral pneumonia
- Eczema herpeticum
- Acute cerebellitis - ataxia, normal mental state
Chicken pox school exclusion
●7 days since onset
or
All lesions are dried
●Immunocompromised/neonate
VZIG - give varicella zoster immunoglobulin
Chicken pox vaccination
Live attenuated vaccine
MMRV @18 months
MMR @12months
SSPE
Subacute sclerosing panencephelitis
7 yrs after a MEASLES infection
fatal progressive brain damage
Measles exclusion
index case - 5 days
Immunocomp/neonates - 14days
(no vertical transmission in pregnancy)
