Childhood complaints, chapman points and OMT Flashcards
Common childhood complaints
- poor suckling, colic, torticollis, otitis media, sinusitis, other URI, croup, Asthma
- GERD, constipation, Growing pains, back pain, joint pain, dysmenorrhea
Cranial treatments in infants and children
- highly useful in: poor suckling, infant constipation, birth trauma
- techniques to use: condylar decompression, balanced membranous tension
OMT for musculoskeletal complaints in children
- evaluate at least the joints above and below the joint in question
- remember to perform orthopedic exam as well as osteopathic evaluation
- treat with any appropriate modality
- don’t forget to send your patients home with exercises!
- stretches/strength training can make a world of difference
OMT for abdominal complaints in children
- viscerosomatics
- chapman’s points
Parasympathetics to upper GI system, SI, and ascending and transverse colon
vagus (OA, AA)
Descending colon, sigmoid, rectum parasympathetics pelvic splanchnic (S2-4)
-increased tone–>increased peristalsis
Upper GI tract sympathetics
T5-10
Middle GI tract sympathetics
ligament of treitz to splenic flexure
T10-11
Lower GI tract sympathetics
splenic flexure to rectum
- T12-L2
- increased tone–>decreased peristalsis
Appendix anterior chapman point
-Tip of 12th rib
Appendix posterior chapman point
TP of T11 on R
Intestine anterior chapman point
just below ASIS
Colon chapman point
along the IT band
Rectum chapman point anteriorly
just below the lesser trochanter of the femur
OMT for poor suckle/feeding
-cranial-especially condylar decompression
OMT for GERD
- cranial may also be useful, particularly in infants with GERD
- viscerosomatics-OA, AA, T5-T9
OMT for constipation
- treat dysfunction at viscerosomatic levels (upper and lower GI; sympathetic and parasympathetics) with any appropriate modalities
- also treat any pelvic (innominate/sacral) dysfunction
- mesenteric release
