childhood Flashcards
Postman
death of childhood - evident=increasing amount of young people acting as adults
- Britain 2nd highest teen pregnancy rate
- dress code changed
children are losing their innocence and purity
losing childhood by social media and internet
learning adult information, games and movies that are 18+ available
this is breaking down the information hierarchy - loosing innocence, purity
information is spread by written work (media, newspapers etc) before it was word of mouth
adults can choose what info to give their child
info hierarchy happens when info is hidden from children to protect their innocence
Qvotrup

today, children are more valued, better cared for, educated, enjoy better health care services and have rights
March of progress view - over the last few centuries, children’s lives have been improving and are now better than ever
the family and society have become child centered
parents invest emotional work, time and money into their children
much of media output and leisure activities are designed specifically for children
Butler et al
children and decision making - an important change in the role of children is that they now have more rights. there are lots of laws to protect children, and the state can even take them away from their parents for protection
they get lots of say behind closed doors (in the family) - even about the important decisions is children today have power in families
hillman, brannen, woodroffe, howard
children have different experiences of childhood depending on their:
gender: hillman - boys have more freedom,
ethnicity: brannen - asian parents tend to be particularly strict
class: woodroffe - w/c children are more likely to suffer from behavioral disorders
howard - illness, educational underachievement, child protection register. suffer material and cultural deprivation
therefore whether the position of children in society has improved or not depends on their gender, ethnicity and class
Firestone and holt
not improved - children are unequal in relation to adults: ‘protection’ from paid work - makes children dependent on their parents so it’s not protection, its inequality. children are controlled in a number of ways:
1) neglect and abuse - indicates the dark side of family life in which children are the victims
2) space - stranger danger - driven to school, not allowed in pubs or shops
3) time - bed time, tv time
4) bodies - adults control how children sit, walk , what they wear
5) access to resources - labour laws and compulsory schooling exclude children form paid work so they are financially dependent on their parents. pocket money depends on good behavior and grade
gittens
not improved
age patriarchy - adults dominate children and children are forced to be dependent on adults
hockey and james
not improved
children want to escape from childhood because it is oppressive
they escape it through either acting up swearing, drinking, smoking or acting down behaving like babies
furedi
not improving
parents are so worried about their children’s safety that they prevent them from playing outside etc and not developing their imagination or social skills
furedi outlines the extreme lengthen parents go to in order to ensure their children’s safety pointing out their parental paranoia
these tactics parents use to keep their children safe with actually be harmful to their development.
