What is Child Protection?
Activity undertaken to protect specific children who are suffering, or at risk of suffering significant harm
What is the definition of Child Abuse.
3 elements all must be present for it to be abuse.
Significant harm to the child
Carer has some responsibility for that harm
Significant connected between carer’s responsibility for child and harm to child
What is GIRFEC?
Getting It Right For Every Child
There is a named person for every child as a single point of contact to provide advice and support to families and to raise and deal with concerns about a child’s wellbeing
What are the 3 stages of Managing Dental Neglect?
Preventative dental team management
– raise concerns with parents, offer support, monitor progress
Preventative multi-agency management
–liaise with other professionals (e.g. health visitor, GP, social worker) to see if concerns are shared
Child protection referral
– in complex or deteriorating situations, referral is to social services (by telephone and then writing)
What are some extraoral signs of physical abuse?
Bruising of the face
Bruising of the ears
Abrasions and lacerations
Burns and bites
Choke or chord marks around the neck
Eye injuries
Hair pulling
Fractures (nose, mandible, zygoma)
What are some intraoral signs of physical abuse?
Contusions
Bruises
Abrasions and lacerations
Burns
Tooth trauma
