What are some methods of physical abuse?
Hitting, shaking, throwing, poisoning, burning, drowning, suffocation, induced illness
What are some signs of physical injury?
Bruises, bites, burns, scars, fractures
Stress related symptoms (tension, headaches, anxiety etc.)
Very alert
Flinching for no reason
Avoiding talk of events & eye contact
Where are abusive injuries likely to be found?
Ears - pinch marks Triangle of safety - ears, side of face & neck Inner arms & thighs Intra oral Chest & abdomen
Where are accidental injuries usually found?
Over bony prominences
What signs are there that you should worry when a child presents with an injury?
Does the explanation fit the clinical findings?
Has there been delay in presenting with the injury & seeking advice?
Behaviour of the child
What would be considered unusual behaviour in parents?
Refusal to allow proper treatment or hospital admission
Unprovoked aggression towards staff
Explanation inconsistent with injury
What is the definition of physical neglect?
The persistent failure to meet a child’s basic physical and/or psychological needs, likely to result in the serious impairment of the child’s health or development.
Includes failing to ensure access to appropriate medical care or treatment.
How should you manage dental neglect?
Raise concerns with parents Explain required changes Offer support Keep accurate records Monitor progress If v concerned involve other agencies/make a referral
What is the definition of emotional abuse?
Persistent emotional maltreatment of a child such as to cause severe and persistent adverse effects on the child’s emotional development
What are the signs of physical neglect?
Regularly hungry, steal food, cold
Dirty clothes & inappropriately dressed
Dirty home
Appears pale, underweight, large swollen stomach
Failure to attend important appointments
Developmental delay, poor speech, stunted growth
What are signs of emotional abuse?
Poor growth & developmental delay Educational failure Social immaturity Lack of social responsiveness, aggression or indiscriminate friendliness Challenging behaviour Attention difficulties Concerning parent-child interaction
What risk factors contribute to child abuse?
Relationship problems Previous abuse in family Male/female household that is not the father/mother Early, prolonged separation from mother Substance misuse Mental health problems
