What do accidental injuries typically involve?
-bony prominences
-match the history
-are in the keeping with the development of the child
what are typical features of non-accidental injuries?
bruising
burns
bite marks
eye injuries
bone fractures
abrasions and lacerations
frenal injuries (not conclusive)
non-ambulatory
what are the warning signs?
-unexplained injuries
-late presentation/delayed presentation
-excuses that are inconsistent with the nature of the injuries
-repeated history
-covering up with clothing, not appropriate with the time of year
-parents not concerned or feigning concern
-shrinking away from physical contact
-visibly fearful
-injuries to both sides of the body
-injuries to soft tissue
-injuries with patterns
emotional abuse warning signs
lagging behind peers developmentally
sudden speech disorder
extremely aggressive or passive
fear of new situations
overreaction to mistakes
child may be desperate to please “did i do good?”

use professional curiosity to build a rapport and start a dialogue
ask children about their home life, hobbies, friends, siblings, school life etc

how to manage dental neglect?
raise concerns with parent/carer
explain changes that are required
offer support
keep accurate contemporaneous records
monitor progress regularly
if still concerned, refer to other agencies
