What is the definition of ‘phonology’?
Study of speech sounds so a child’s phonological development begins at birth with the first noises it makes.
What do children not do?
learn complete words in one go
What are the 4 stages of pre-verbal stage?
1) Vegetative (0-4 months)
2) Cooing (4-7 months)
3) Babbling (6-12 months)
4) Protoword (9-12 months)
What is an example of vegetative language?
Biological sounds

Random vocal play
What is an example of babbling language?
Repeated babbling sounds, vowels and constants
What is an example of protoword language?
Word sounds like ‘mmm’ then point
Developing pronunciation within children
they often learn something that sounds like an adult word but with a difference.
E.g. children may say ‘goggy’ rather than ‘dog’
What is the definition of ‘deletion’?
Babies miss out consonants at the end of word. E.g. ‘ca’ rather than ‘cat’
what is the definition of ‘substitution’ ?
Babies substitute one sound for another ‘ship’ to ‘tip’
what is the definition of ‘addition’ ?
Babies often add an extra vowel to the end of a word.
E.g. ‘dog’ to ‘doggie’
what is the definition of ‘reduplication’?
Babies repeat a whole syllable
E.g. mama to dada
What is the definition of ‘constant cluster reduction’?
Babies miss out a constant when they occur in groups
E.g. spider to pider
What is the definition of ‘deletion of unstressed syllables’?
Unstressed syllables are missed out
E.g. banana

which part of the mouth or throat controls air flow
