Remember if pt takes any medications specify:
1) when med was taken
2) whether it helped
Common meds:
Protonix Tylenol Motrin Ibuprofen Zofran (anti-nausea) Pepto-Bismo TUMS
Do you have a hx of prior episodes? If pt answers yes, make sure to answer:
1) does current episode feel similar or different? What’s different about it?
2) Has the pt seen a doctor for the episode before? What tests did they run/prescriptions were given? Was there a diagnosis?
Do you have a hx of ___ ____ or ___?
Abd surgeries, problems
Common abd problems (in hx section):
Pancreatitis, cholecystitis, diverticulitis, colitis, GERD (acid reflux), gastritis, peptic ulcers, gastroenteritis
Common abd surgeries:
Appy, chole, gastric bypass
Common context questions:
1) when was your last BM? Was it normal? Was there blood? (Docs just want to know if there was blood in stool)
2) for the ladies: when was your LMP? Was it regular?
3) have you traveled recently? Used any abx recently? Is anyone else sick in household?
Physical exam findings:
1) normal abd exam:
Soft, nontender, nondistended, no rebound, mo guarding
- rectal exam : soft brown stool, GUIAC negative
Physical Exam Findings:
Abnormal findings:
(Location) tenderness with palpation with rebound and voluntary guarding, distended, GUIAC positive
MDM:
Common things doctors will order for abd pain patients:
Medications:
1) Toradol
2) Dilaudid
3) GI Cocktail
4) Zofran
5) IV fluids
Common tests: CT of abd, labs that check for WBC, lipase level, LFT, and UA
Common DDX:
1) Appendicitis
2) Cholecystitis
3) Colitis
4) Diverticulitis
5) Gastritis
6) Gastroenteritis
7) Pancreatitis
8) UTI
9) Pyelonephritis
10) Ovarian Cyst (for ladies)
