Type of virus is VZV
herpes
Chickenpox rash development
Macular -> papular -> vesicular -> crusted
V pruritic - itch
When is chicken pox more severe
Neonates, immunocomp, adults
Shingles rash
Painful maculopapular then vesicular
Doent cross midline - dermatome distribution
When is shingles treated with aciclovir
Beware ocular, disseminated, CNS disease
Infectivity chiceknpox
infectivity = 4 days before rash, until 5 days after the rash first appeared
Incubation chiockenpoz
incubation period = 10-21 days
Complications chickenpoz
pneumonia
encephalitis (cerebellar involvement may be seen)
disseminated haemorrhagic chickenpox
arthritis, nephritis and pancreatitis may very rarely be seen
Management cheicknepix
Off school while infectious
VZIG IV pregnant or neonates
IV aciclovir if immmunocompromised and chixken pox develops
