Chi Square Week 8 Flashcards
What are the essential features of Chi Square?
- tests relationships between two categorical/nominal grouping variables
What are the assumptions of Chi Square?
- independence
- no more than 20% of the expected counts are below 5
- all expected counts are bigger than 1
What kind of research questions can Chi Square answer?
Is there a different pattern of responses between ….
What are standardised residuals?
The difference between what you actually observed and what you would have expected under the null hypothesis, expressed as a standardised number
What kind of research question does Chi Square address?
Differences in patterns of responding
What is a residual?
A value that describes the departure from an expected or predicted outcome
When is a standardised residual negative?
If what you observed is LESS than what you would have expected under the null
When is a standardised residual positive?
If what you observed is MORE than what you would have expected under the null
When is there a significant relationship using chi square?
When chi square sig is below .05
What is chi square?
A test of relationships, but more so differences in patterns of response
What does the assumption of independence mean?
No more than one piece of info from each participant
What are expected counts?
What we would expect to see/what values we would expect if the null hypothesis was true (there’s no difference)
