Cheonggyecheon Flashcards
what year did the Cheonggyecheon river restoration take place
2003-2005
why did the river need restoring
health/ flood risk - bad sanitation
how many visitors / how many events took place in 10 years
190 million visitors, 30k events
how much did the restoration project cost
(just under) $300 million
how much does it cost to maintain the river
$6.5 million per year
population of Seoul
10 million
what is its population density compared to New York / Rome
population twice that of New York and 8x that of Rome
what happened to the river in the 1960s-70s
In 1960s the river was completely covered over (because it was considered a health and flood risk)
In 1970s an expressway was built that totally covered the river ( this prevented evapotranspiration , damaged river flows and enclosed the river system)
how did covering the river effect the environment
- virtually no vegetation
- no evapotranspiration
- river totally enclosed preventing evaporation from river and resulting in the only input into the system being from urban drainage systems and water waste
- flow rates were highly IRREGULAR affecting wildlife and sediment balances
- poor water quality
Aims of restoration project
- bring environmental benefits
- ecologically sensitive pedestrian corridor
- dismantle elevated freeway above river
