Chemistry: The science of change (chapter 1) Flashcards
What is Chemistry the study of?
Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes that matter undergoes.
What is matter?
Anything that has mass or occupies space.
What is a substance?
A form of matter that has a definite composition and distinct properties such as color, smell, and taste.
EX) salt, iron, & water.
What are the three states of matter?
Solid- held close together with little room to move.
Liquid- held close together, but has room to move freely.
Gas-particles are separated by distance.
What is a mixture?
a combination of two or more substances in which each substance retains its distinct identity.
EX) trail mix, apple juice, & air.
Is a mixture solid, liquid, or gas?
A mixture can be all three.
Homogenous mixture
Remains uniform EX) a teaspoon if sugar dissolved into a class or water.
Heterogeneous mixture
composition is not uniform
EX) mixing sand and iron fillings or chocolate chip cookies.
What is physical process?
Used to separate mixtures, this process will not change the identity of the substance.
EX) melting ice, will still be water.
What is quantitative?
Measured and expressed with numbers.
What is qualitative?
Not requiring explicit measurement.
What are physical properties?
can be observed and measured without changing identity of a substance.
EX) melting is a physical change
What is a chemical property?
Is a corrosion or oxidation of iron. After chemical change, the substance no longer exists,
What is an extensive property?
measured value depends on the amount of matter. Values of extensive properties can be added together.
What is intensive property?
Property depends on density and temperature which intensive properties. Temperatures and other intensive properties are not additive.
