Chapter 2: Atoms and the periodic table Flashcards
What is an Atom?
The smallest quantity of matter, that still retains properties of matter.
What is an Element?
Substance that cannot be broken down into two or more simpler substances.
What are subatomic particles?
particles that are smaller than an atom.
What is significant about coulombs law?
Like charges repel, and opposite charges attract.
What is the charge of an electron?
9.10x10^-28g
What are the radioactive substances?
- Alpha positively charged particles called a particles.
- Beta rays/particles are electrons detect away from negative charge plate.
- Gamma rays like Xray, have to charge and are unaffected by external electric or negative fields.
Are atoms mostly an empty space?
YES.
contains the electrons spread throughout the atom.
Are positive charges concentrated the nucleus?
YES
nucleus is also very tiny, dense, and placed in the center of the atom.
Are atoms neutral?
YES
Are the number of protons equal to the number of electrons?
YES
How are neutrons equal to atomic mass?
Neutrons is equal to Atomic mass minus Atomic number.
What are isotopes?
Atoms that have the same atomic number but different mass number.
What are the rows called on a periodic table?
PERIODS
what are columns called on a periodic table?
GROUPS
What are some properties of metals?
good conductors of heat and electricity.
