CHEMISTRY STATES OF MATTER Flashcards
Solids
Definite volume and Definite shape, Lattice form
Liquids
Definite volume no definite shape
Gas
No definite volume and no Definite Shape
Kinetic Energy
The energy anything moving possesses
Potential Energy
the energy an object at rest posseses
Arrangement
The formation of the particles
Which state of matter possesses potential energy and the least amount of kinetic energy
Solid
Which state of matter has high kinetic energy but the least amount of potential?
GAS
What happens when heat is added to a solid?
form liquid
What happens when a liquid is in extremely low-pressure
Freezes
what is Endothermic?
Releasing energy in the form of heat
What is exothermic?
Storing energy
Condensation
gaseous phase to liquid phase
Evaporation
liquid phase to gaseous phase/vapour
Melting Point
temperature of a substance when changed from a solid to a liquid
Boiling Point
temperature of a substance when changed from liquid to gaseous phase
Deposition
process of the gaseous phase to the solid phase without passing the liquid phase
Sublimation
process of the solid phase to the gaseous phase without passing the liquid phase
Brownian Motion
Liquid and gas particle move randomly as they are bombarded by other particles in the fluid
How does temperature affect Brownian motion?
The higher the temperature the faster the particles move around
Diffusion
Movement of particles spreading
How does temperature affect diffusion
When the temperature is cold the particles take more time to diffuse, and when the temperature is heated then the particles will diffuse faster as they get more kinetic energy
How does size affect diffusion
Graham’s law; if the particles are heavy they will diffuse slower. Smaller molecules will diffuse faster than larger molecules due to the difference in their mass
