chemistry specification part 4 Flashcards
what is a strong acid?
an acid that ionises almost completely in solution to release hydrogen ions
how does changing the concentration of acid affect its ph?
if the concentration of H+ ions increases by a factor of 10 then the ph decreases by 1.
If the concentration of H+ ions decreases by a factor of 10 then the ph increases by 1.
what do acids and metal oxide produce?
salt and water
what do acids and metal hydroxides produce?
salt and water
what do acids and metals produce?
metal salts and hydrogen
what is the chemical test for hydrogen?
lit splint makes a squeaky pop sound
what do acids and metal carbonates produce?
salt and water and carbon dioxide
what is the chemical test for carbon dioxide?
bubbling the gas through limewater and if it turns cloudy, carbon dioxide is present
are common carbonates and hydroxides soluble or insoluble in water?
insoluble
what does dilute mean?
an acid with a small number of acid molecules compared to the volume of water
