chemistry specification part 1 Flashcards
why are some metals classified as alkali
alkali metals all have one outer shell electron so they have similar chemical properties. All group1 metals
what are two properties of alkali metals
very soft
low melting point
how will alkali metals react with water
will react vigorously and produce hydrogen gas and a hydroxide of that metal
e.g sodium+water–> sodium hydroxide+hydrogen
how does lithium react with water
lithium will move around the surface and fizz vigourously
how do sodium and potassium react in water
both react and move around the surface and fizz. Additionally, they will melt from the heat of the reaction. Potassium gets hot enough to ignite the hydrogen gas being produced.
what is the trend in group 1
the elements get more reactive as you go down
what colour and physical state is chlorine?
fairly reactive,poisonous and green gas
what colour and physical state is bromine?
poisonous,red-brown liquid which gives an orange vapour when at room temp
what colour and physical state is iodine?
dark grey crystalline solid which gives off purple vapour when heated
how can you predict the physical properties of halogens further down the group?
the colour gets darker and the melting point increases so you can predict that astatine (below iodine) is a dark-coloured solid
complete the sentence:
halogens higher up in group 7 are…
more reactive and attract the outer electron more easily
