Chemistry: solubility and molarity Flashcards
How does temperature affect solubility?
As temperature increases, solubility of solids increase while solubility of gas decreases
How does pressure affect solubility?
does not affect liquid or solid but for gas when pressure increases gas becomes more soluble
What is a solute?
The substance that is dissolved
What is a solvent?
The thing that dissolves the solute
What is a solution?
A homogenous mixture
What is a saturated solution?
a mixture that contains as much dissolved solute as is possible at a given temperature
What is a unsaturated solution?
a solution that contains less solute than a saturated solution at a given temperature and pressure
What is a supersaturated solution?
a solution that contains more dissolved solute than a saturated solution under the same conditions
What is concentration?
the amount of a substance in a given volume
What is a dilute solution?
A mixture that has only a little solute dissolved in a certain amount of solvent
What is a preipitate?
a solid that forms and settles out of a liquid mixture
What is a solution at equillibrium?
Rate of dissolving=rate of precipitation
What is molarity?
the number of moles of solute per liter of solution
What is percent by mass?
the ratio of the mass of each element to the total mass of the compound expressed as a percentage
What is ppm?
[Gram of solute/Gram of solution]x1,000,000
