Chemistry Reaction Rates Flashcards
What are the two ways of measuring the rate of a reaction?
The rate at which reactants are used up
The rate at which products are made
What are the 5 factors affecting rate of reaction?
Concentration of solutions
Temperature
Surface area of solid reactants
Catalysts
Pressure
What is collision theory?
That the collisions between particles must be of sufficient energy (equal or greater than the total energy) for a successful reaction
What is the activation energy?
The total amount of energy required for a reaction to occur
How does a catalyst work?
It provides an alternative route for the reaction that has a lower activation energy than for an uncatalysed reaction
What are examples of good catalysts?
Transition metals or transition metal compounds, often
Palladium, platinum and rhodium
Manganese oxide in decomposition of H202
What are the units for rate of reaction?
Collisions per second
How does temperature increase the rate of reaction?
Particles have more kinetic energy
Particles move faster and have more energy than activation energy
More frequent successful collisions
