Chemistry of the atmosphere C9 Flashcards
How was the early atmosphere formed?
Volcanoes erupted which caused gas to be released.
What was the early Earth atmosphere similar to today?
The atmosphere of Mars and Venus
Why cant we have specific percents of gases in the early atmosphere?
Because no one was there to measure it.
What 3 ways did Carbon dioxide get absorbed?
Dissolved in Ocean
Green plants used Photosynthesis
Fossils formed containing carbon
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + Water = Glucose + Oxygen
What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis?
6CO₂ + 6H₂O = C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Name three Greenhouse Gases
Carbon dioxide, methane, water vapour
Name 4 human activities that affect CO₂
1: Deforestation
2: Burning fossil fuels
3: Agriculture
4: Creating waste
Name 4 ways increased atmospheric temperature would affect the earth
1: Polar ice caps melting
2: Changes in rainfall patterns
3: Frequency and severity of storms
4: changes in temperature and amount of water in habitats
What is a carbon footprint?
The measure of the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases released over somethings life cycle
What are some ways to reduce Carbon footprints?
1: Renewable energy
2: More energy efficient processes
3: Governments tax companies or individuals based on GHG output
4: Governments putting cap on GHG output
5: Technology that captures Carbon dioxide by storing deep underground
What is the difference between complete and incomplete combustion?
Complete combustion has Oxygen in excess, while incomplete combustion doesn’t have enough Oxygen
How is Carbon Monoxide dangerous?
Carbon monoxide binds to the haemoglobin in your blood meaning less Oxygen can get around your body. It also has no smell or colour so it is hard to detect.
