Chemistry of Carboxylic Acids Flashcards
1
Q
Carboxylic Acids are acidic due to two reasons:
A
They have a polar effect with the carbonyl carbon vs. oxygen, and they also are resonance stabilized.
2
Q
You can increase acidity by adding :
A
halides. for example, trifluoroacetic acid.
3
Q
Which are more acidic? Sulfonic acids, or carboxylic acids?
A
Sulfonic acids because sulfur oxidation state can better stabilize negative charge on oxygens.
