Chemistry exam Flashcards
1
Q
What is an atom?
A
The smallest neutral part of an element that can take part in chemical reactions.
2
Q
What are the subatomic particles (name, mass, charge)?
A
- Proton (+1, relative mass of 1)
- Neutron (0, relative mass of 1)
- Electron (-1, relative mass of 1/1835)
3
Q
What is the difference between mass number and atomic number?
A
Mass number: the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom
Atomic number: the number of protons in an atom
4
Q
What are isotopes?
A
Atoms of an element with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons (same atomic number but different mass number).
5
Q
What is RAM?
A
The relative atomic mass of an element is the mean relative mass of the isotopes in the element.
6
Q
How do we calculate the Ar of an element?
A
Total mass of the atoms / the number of atoms
7
