Chemistry exam Flashcards
What’s combustion?
Burning
What’s a fuel?
A substance that usually transferred by heating
When hydrogen reacts with oxygen what’s the final product?
Carbon dioxide
What’s oxidation?
Oxidation is when a substance reacts with oxygen?
Metal + Oxygen forms into…
Metal oxide
In a reaction does the mass of the reactants stay the same or change the mass of products
Stays the same
When a hydrocarbon fuel combusts, it appears to lose mass, why?
The products of the reaction fly in the air
What’s phlogiston?
Phlogiston is what scientist thought the substance it gave out was to the air
Why did the phlogiston theory not work?
It didn’t work because scientist couldn’t explain why metal gained mass when they reacted with oxygen.
What’s the fire triangle?
The fire triangle are three steps that are used to remove fire
What do Water extinguishers remove?
Heat
What do Powder and carbon dioxide extinguishers?
Exclude oxygen
What do Foam extinguishers remove?
Heat and oxygen
What should you NEVER use for oil fire’s?
Water because it can spit and cause the fire to be bigger
What should you do to oil fire’s ?
Foam
What are the three things on the fire triangle.
Heat oxygen fuel
What’s complete combustion?
The fuel reacts completely with oxygen?
What’s incomplete combustion?
The fuel partly reacts with oxygen
What happens to sulphur when heated?
Sulphur dioxide
what are fossil fuels and are they harmful?
Fossil fuels are pollutants and are harmful as they harm habitats and organisms.
What’s acid rain?
Water that is more acidic by dissolved sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide.
what else does catalytic converters remove?
Carbon monoxide
What are green house gases?
They are gases that trap heat better than others.
can you explain global warming?
Heat comes from the sun and enters the atmosphere some heat reflects back into space. Greenhouse gases stop some of that heat from escaping. But it’s not enough so that increases global warming.
