Chemistry - Elements And Comounds Flashcards
What is an atom?
The smallest and simplest type of particle. Everything is made up of atoms
What is an element?
A substance that contains only one type of atom (atoms of the same type are known as an element)
How do you know what an element is and give an example?
We know what an element is because it has a name or symbol
Eg. Oxygen = O
Aluminium = AI
What is the periodic table?
A list that contains all the elements in a table
What is a compound?
When different atoms join together
CaO is a compound, why?
Ca and O chemically combined to make this compound
Compounds contain only 1 element, T or F?
F because 2 or elements have been joined up
How are compounds formed?
When atoms from different elements join (they are chemically combined)
What are elements in the periodic table in?
Periods (rows)
Groups (columns)
What does down and what goes across the periodic table?
Groups- go down
Periods- go across
Give an example of a group and provide a description for that group that all elements in the group could have?
Group 1
Soft, shiny metals
In a group, how do the properties change?
As they go down a group
What elements reacts more violently in a group. Bottom or top?
Bottom
Do elements in a group share similar properties?
Yes, similar but not the same
What does knowing the group of an element help with?
To predict how it will react
