Chemistry Definitions Flashcards
The smallest unit that makes up an element
Atom
The central and most dense part of an atom that is made up of protons and neutrons
Nucleus
A positively charged particle found in the nucleus of an atom
Proton
An uncharged particle found in the nucleus of an atom
Neutron
A negatively charged particle orbiting the nucleus of an atom
Electron
A subatomic particle that make up protons, neutrons and electrons
Quark
A group of two or more atoms held together using chemical bonds
Molecule
A type of atoms that have one electron for their valence shell
Alkali metals
A type of atoms that have a full valence shell, making them unreactive
Noble gases
A positively charged ion
Cation
A negatively charged ion
Anion
The outermost shell of an atom/ion that contains the valence electrons
Valence Shell
The electrons that make up the outermost shell and contains one or more atoms
Valence Electron
A charged atom with an unstable amount of electrons and protons
Ion
A group of 8 electrons occupying a shell in an atom
