Chemistry culminating (properties) Flashcards
What are the five characteristics of a chemical reaction?
- A new odor
- Change in color
- Gas is produced
- Change in energy
- Precipitate (solid) formation
What is a chemical property?
A characteristic of a substance when the COMPOSITION OF THE SUBSTANCE IS CHANGED AND NEW SUBSTANCE(S) ARE PRODUCED
What are the physical properties?
a characteristic of a substance WITHOUT CHANGING THE COMPOSITION OF THE SUBSTANCE
What are some characteristics of a physical reaction?
- A change in SHAPE OR SIZE
- A change in STATE
- FORMATION OF A SOLUTION
What is a chemical change?
The type of change that produces NEW SUBSTANCE.
What is a physical change?
A change that produces NO NEW SUBSTANCES
What are properties in science?
Quantitative and qualitative, Chemical and physical
What is lustre and opacity
A physical property: How bright, shiny, or dull something is. The ability of light to pass through an object
What is color and state
A physical property: The color of a substance and the state its in (state of matter)
What is brittleness and viscosity?
A physical property: The break-ability/flexibility of a substance. The ease at which a substance can flow
What is hardness and malleability?
A physical property: The ability of a substance to scratch (or be scratched by) another substance and the ability of a substance to be formed or hammered.
What is ductility and conductivity (electrical)?
A physical property: The ability of a substance to be formed or pulled into wires. How easily electricity can flow through a substance.
What is flammability and reactivity?
A chemical property: The ability of a substance to burn. The ability of a substance to combine and form new substances
What is toxicity and radioactivity?
A chemical property: A poisonous substance, and a substance that gives off radiation
What is sensitivity to light?
A chemical property: How sensitive a substance is when under light or the sun
