Chemistry Ch 9.1 Flashcards
What does the localized electron model view a molecule as?
It views it as a collection of atoms that are bound together by sharing the electrons in their orbitals.
In the hybridization table, what components do we take into consideration?
The # of electron domains, molecular structure (lewis structure), overall electron geometry, ideal bond angle, # of lone pairs, molecular geometry, actual bond angle, polarity, hybridization.
Fill in the table for CO2.
of electron domains: 2
overall electron geometry: Linear
ideal bond angle: 180 degrees
#of lone pairs: 0
molecular geometry: Linear
actual bond angle: 180 degrees
polarity: non-polar
hybridization: sp
Fill in the table for HF
of electron domains:
Fill in the table for H20
Fill in the table for CH4
Fill in the table for NH3
Fill in the table for BH3
Fill in the table for XY2 when X has 4 V.A and Y has only 1
What are the 2 types of bonds?
Sigma and pi bonds.
What types of bonds do single, double, and triple have?
Single -> sigma
Double -> sigma, and pi
Triple -> sigma, pi, and pi
What are bonds, and what are antibonds?
Bonds are the stabilizing interaction between atoms (lowering the energy), whereas antibonda re the destabilizing interactions between the atoms (increasing the energy).
Diamagnetic vs paramagnetic:
Diamagnetic: no unpaired electrons
Paramagnetic: at least 1 upaired electron
How do you calculate bond order?
(Bond Order Electrons - Anti Bond Order Electrons)/2
