Chemistry Flashcards
Atom
The smallest unit of an element.
It has a central nucleus and surrounded by electrons.
Nucleus
At the centre of an atom.
The have protons and neutrons.
Contains most of an atoms mass.
Proton
Positively charged particle.
Found in an atomic nucleus.
Neutron
A neutron is neutral.
It is an uncharge particle.
Also found in an atomic nucleus.
Electron
Located in shells around the nucleus.
Negatively charged particle.
Attracted to the positive particle in the nucleus.
Atomic Number
It is he number of protons n the nucleus of an atom. The atomic number determines which element an atom is.
Chemical Symbol
The standard way that scientists write the names of the elements, using either a capital letter or a capital followed by a lowercase letter. For example, carbon is C and copper is Cu

Ionisation
The energy change that occurs when an atom loses an electron to form a positive ion.
Element
Only made up of one type of atom.
Electron configuration
An ordered list of the number of electrons in each shell.
Cations
Positively charged ions
Anions
Negatively charged ions
