Chemistry 3.1 Flashcards
List signs of a physical change
- No new substances created
- Easy to reverse
- Small amount of energy released/ absorbed
List signs of a chemical change
- New substances created
- Difficult to reverse
- Large amounts of energy absorbed or released
Chemical test for water present
Anhydrous copper (III) Sulfate turns from white to blue
Physical Test for pure water
Test the melting point and boiling point.
MP = 0
BP= 100
Definition of element
A substance containing only one type of atom
Properties of metals
- High MP/BP
-Malleable
-Good electrical/ heat conductors - Shiny
Properties of non-metals
- Low MP/BP
- Brittle
- Electrical insulators
- Dull
Where are non- metals found in the Periodic Table?
(Top) Right hand side of periodic table
Diatomic Elements?
Bromine (Because)
Oxygen (Of)
Chlorine (Chemistry)
Iodine (I)
Hydrogen (Have)
Nitrogen (No)
Fluorine (Friends)
Compound definition
Substance containing more than one type of atom, chemically bonded together.
How can compounds be formed?
By heating their elements together. For example, zinc + sulphur —> zinc sulphide
Are the properties of a compound similar or different to the properties of the elements it is made from?
Different
Ammonium Chloride word equation
Ammonia + Hydrogen Chloride -> Ammonium Chloride
Why does it take longer for some substances to diffuse slower?
Their molecules/ atoms are heavier.
When you heat up a diffusion tube what happens?
The product forms faster because the particles move faster and collide more often. It still forms in the same place because both of the gases diffuse faster.
Solute
Substance which is going to be dissolved
Solvent
Liquid in which the solute is dissolved in a solution.
Solution
The resulting mixture of the solvent with the solute dissolved in it.
Saturated
A solution in which no more solute can be dissolved
Suspension
A solid floating/present in a solution because it did not dissolve
Soluble
A substance which can be dissolved.
Insoluble
A substance which can not be dissolved.
What is solubility measured in
g per 100g if solvent
If 18.185g of sodium chloride can dissolve in 50g of water what is its solubility?
18.185 x 2 = 36.37
50 x 2 = 100
36.37g of sodium chloride per 100g of water
Solubility curve. On the line means…
Saturated
Solubility curve. Above the line means…
Insoluble
Solubility curve. Below the line means…
Soluble
What does adding impurities to a substance do to its melting and boiling point?
Lowers melting point
Raises boiling point
Is a mixture a pure substance?
No
