Chemistry 2 Flashcards
What is an Isotope?
Isotopes are variants of a particular chemical element which differ in neutron number.
What is the meaning of Radioactive?
Emitting or relating to the emission of ionizing radiation or particles.
What is Half-Life?
The time required for one half the atoms of a given aunt of a radioactive substance to disintegrate.
What is Alpha Radiation
Particles sent out by some radioactive nuclei, each particle consisting of two protons and two neutrons bound together, Akpah particles carry a positive charge
What is Gamma Radiation?
A photon of penetrating electromagnetic radiation (gamma radiation) emitted from an atomic nucleus.
What is Beta Radiation?
High-energy electrons carrying a negative charge, that are sent out by some radioactive nuclei.
What does Stable mean?
Fixed and steady. Perfectly balanced
What does Unstable mean?
The opposite fo stable. Not perfectly balanced
What are Radioisotopes?
A radioactive isotope. A version of a chemical element that has an unstable nucleus and emits radiation during its decay to a stable form. An atom with excess nuclear radiation
What is Nuclear Radiation?
The energy particle or rays that are given off from radioactive elements, such as uranium, as it decays
What are Alpha Particles?
A helium nucleus emitted by some radioactive substances, originally regarded as a ray.
What are Beta Particles?
A fast-moving electron emitted by radioactive decay of substances (originally regarded as rays).
What are Gamma Rays?
Penetrating electromagnetic radiation of a kind arising from the radioactive decay of atomic nuclei.
What is Cosmic Radiation?
A radiation of high penetrating power that originates in outer space and consists partly of high-energy atomic nuclei
Chemical Reaction
A chemical reaction is a process that leads to the transformation of one set of chemical substances to another
Exothermic
The releases of heat
Endothermic
Requiring the absorption of heat
Precipitate
A solid that’s formed when two
liquids are mixed together. A precipitate may
show up as either chunk of solid, or more likely
has a milky appearance due to the presence of very
small solid flakes.
Reactants/Reagent
The stuff at the left of the chemical equation. The equation.
Product
The stuff on the right of a chemical equation. What the equation equals to
Coefficients
a numerical or constant quantity placed before and multiplying the variable in an algebraic expression
eg in maths (e.g. 4 in 4x y)
State
One of the four principal conditions in which matter exists—solid, liquid, gas, and plasma
Aqueos
Something that’s dissolved in water
Synthesis Reaction
Two small molecules make one big molecule.
Decomposition Reaction
The opposite of synthesis reaction. One large molecule breaks into two small molecules.
Combustion Reaction
When a reaction combust
Single Displacement Reaction
When one molecule is more reactive with another molecule and takes a molecules spot. cu+so. al and so and cu. cu is with so, then al comes and gets so and knocks ou cu. it then become al+so cu
Double Displacement Reaction
Referred as precipitation Reaction. When two molecules swap places.
Acid Base Reaction
Double displacement reaction where water is formed
