Chemistry 2 Flashcards
What is a chemical bond?
A force of attraction between atoms or ions
What is an electrolyte?
Is a substance that when dissolved creates a solution that is conductive
What are the differences between ionic and covalent bonds?
Ionic
Metals and non metals
Transfer electrons
Covalent
Non metals with non metals
Share electrons
What are the properties of a molecular compounds?
State: any
Form any
Hardness usually soft
Odour yes because the molecules are not held together as tightly
Solubility varies
Melting point much lower than ionic bonds
Electrical conductivity: no in solutions no ions are formed non-electrolytes
What are the seven diatomic molecules?
Never found separated on earth
Hobrfincl Hydrogen Oxygen Bromine Fluorine Iodine Nitrogen Chlorine
What are the properties of ionic compounds?
State: solid
Form :crystalline
Hardness :hard due to the strength of many ionic bonds holding the ions together
Odour: none b/c the strength of the ionic bonds
Solubility: good water pulls the lattice apart
Melting point: very high
Electrical conductivity: yes but only when dissolved. The ions are pulled apart from the lattice due to the water molecules strength. This creates electrolytes
Why does bonding occur?
A force of attraction between the particles draws them together.
What does a metal become in a bonding?
A cation loses its electrons
What does a non metal become when bonding?
An anion which gains electrons.
