Chemistry Flashcards
Describe electromagnetic force
Attraction between positive and negative charges in a atom.
What are all the charges of the subatomic particles in an atom?
Positively charged protons, neutrally charged neutrons and negatively charged electrons.
How are protons, neutrons and electrons arranged in an atom?
Protons and neutrons in the nucleus and electrons in the electron shells.
How are noble gases different from other elements on the periodic table?
They all have a full valence shell which makes them unreactive and stable. They are also all in group 18.
Give an example of a negative ion.
Br-
Give an example of a positive ion
Na+
How are negative ions formed?
By gaining electrons to create a full outer shell.
How are positive ions formed?
By losing electrons to create a full outer shell.
Define the word isotope.
An isotope is a type of atom with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
Define the word ion.
A atom or molecule net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.
Define the word molecule.
A molecule is when two or more non-metals combine. It is when a group of atoms are chemically bonded together.
How to solve ionic compounds.
You use swap and drop.
Define the term carbon dating.
determining the age of an object by using a radioactive isotope of carbon.
What side are the non-metals and metals on?
Metals are on the left and non-metals are on the right.
Is the atomic number or the mass number the bigger number?
Mass number.
