Chemistry Flashcards
Elements
Each element is an individual type of atom (has unique chemical characteristics)
Central Nucleus
Contains most of atomic mass (Contains protons and neutrons)
Protons
have a +1 charge
Neutrons
Have a 0 charge
Outside the nucleus
Electrons (Have a -1 charge)
Electrons
Have very little mass in orbitals (Fundamental Particles)
Ions
Atoms or molecules with a net charge of ‘+’. or ‘-‘ electrical charge (Some ions lose electrons, some ions gain electrons)
Ionic Bonds
Opposites charges attract (an electrostatic attraction)
Covalent Bonds
Occur when atoms share electrons
Nonpolar covalent bond
Electrons shared equally ( <0.5)
Polar covalent bond
Electrons shared unequally ( ≥0.5)
Electronegativity
Determines if a covalent bond will be polar or nonpolar
Electrical neutral atom
of protons = # of electrons
