CHEMISR Flashcards
Before the development of protons, electrons and neutrons, what did scientist order the elements by?
Atomic weight
what did Mendeleev do with the periodic table?
Mendel placed elements in more appropriate places grouping elements with similar properties so patterns could be seen this meant it sometimes left gaps or change the order of atomic weight
what did Mendeleev do with gaps
he predicted the elements properties and what it would be like
what are the elements on the modern periodic table arranged in?
Increasing atomic number
what are the columns going down the periodic table called?
Group
How does the number of electrons on the outside energy level correlate to the group It is in?
The number of electrons on the outside energy level of an atom is the same as the group. It is in on the periodic table.
What do elements in the same group have?
Similar properties
what a group 0 called and what are their proper?
Group 0 are called noble gases they are unreactive because they have a very stable electron arrangement (full outer shell)
what does the boiling point do in noble gases as you go down the group?
The boiling point increases with the increasing of the atomic mass mass
what are winning point and condescending point the same as?
Temperature
what are group 1 metals called
Alkali metals
how many electrons does group 1 elements have i
on the outer shell
1
What are group 1 metals the most?
reactive
What happens when they lose their outer electron?
It forms a full outer energy level and becomes stable
why are group 1 metals stored in oil
stop oxidation
group one maya,s have low
densities and float water
what happens when group one metals react with a halogen
produces metal halides which are white soluble solids
what happens when group 1 metals react with water
Produces an alkaline solution of the metal hydroxide plus hydrogen gas
what does the reactivity of group 1 do when you go down
increase
what are group 7 known as
Halogens
What do group 7 metals do because they all have the same amount of electrons in the outer shell?
All react in a similar way
group 7 are all non metals which consist of
molecules made up of pairs of atoms
what does the boiling point of group 7 do as you move down the group
increases
what does the reactivity of grou o7 do as you move down the group
decreases
what do halogens form
form ions with a charge of 1- by gaining an electron when reacting with metals to form ionic compounds
what happens in an equation when there is a more reactive halogen and a less reactive halogen within a compound?
The more reactive halogen will take the place of the less reactive halogen within the compound. Make sure to balance.
What do the halogens form by sharing electrons with nonmetals?
covalent molecules
where are metals found on the periodic table?
Metals are found in the centre and to the left and bottom of the periodic table
what ion does two metals reacting make
positive ion
what are the atoms in metal like?
Closely packed together within layers
what are the electrons in a metal able to do?
delocalised I’m free to move through the metallic lattice. this creates a strong metallic bond
