why is flame test neccasary
identify metal ions by the color of flame they produce
how to carry out a flame test
- dip loop of an unreactive wire (eg. nichrome) in conc. acid
- hold it in blue flame of bunsen burner until no color change
- dip loop into solid sample and place it on the edge of the blue bunsen flame
