Chemical Substances And Reactions In Everyday Use Flashcards
What are some chemical compounds we use daily?
Sodium fluoride (NaF) in toothpaste, sodium lauryl sulphate (C12H25SO4Na) and phosphoric acid (H3PO4) in cola.
What are the very important chemicals we need that we use in our daily lives?
Gas, electricity, cooking/baking etc.
What are the 2 most basic chemicals?
Acids and bases
What would an acids pH be?
Acids have a pH lower than 7
What would that pH of a base be?
Bases have a pH higher than 7 (7 is neutral)
Acids
Acids release hydrogen ions in water solution
They react with metals to release hydrogen gas
They are sour, tangy, and very acidic, so they ca be found in cardboard drinks
They turn blue litmus paper red
Bases
Bases release hydroxide ions in water solution
Bases taste bitter and feel slippery
Bases do not react with metals to carbonate compounds
Bases turn red litmus paper blue
