Chemical Reactions In Organic Compounds Flashcards
What is elimination reaction?
Elimination reaction is the removal of a small molecule from the molecule of an organic compound.
What is an example of elimination reaction?
The removal of water by concentrated H2SO4 from an alcohol like ethanol.
C2H5OH ==conc H2SO4==> C2H4 + H2O
What is addition reaction?
Addition reaction is one in which two or more organic molecules react to form a single product.
What is an example of addition reaction?
The reaction of unsaurated compounds and halogens:
C2H4 + Br2 ==CCl4==> C2H4Br2
What is substitution reaction?
This is the replacement of an atom or a group of atoms in a molecule of an organic compound with another.
What is an example of substitution reaction?
The reaction of alkanes and halogens in the presence of UV light or heat.
CH4 + Br2 ==UV==> CH3Br + HBr
What is condensation reaction?
This is a reaction between two or more organic molecules to form a larger molecule while a small molecule is released.
What is hydrolysis?
This is a type of reaction where an organic molecule is broken down by water in the presence of acids or bases.
