Alkanones Flashcards
1
Q
What are alkanones?
A
These are dipole carbonyl compounds with the functional group:
O || C / \ R R
2
Q
What are the physical properties of alkanones?
A
- Lower alkanones are soluble in water due to the hydrogen bond and dipole-dipole attraction that is formed between alkanones and water molecules.
- Boiling point increases with increasing molecular mass, arising from the increase in Van Der Waal forces which is a result of increasing electrons.
3
Q
What does oxidizing secondary alcohols lead to?
A
To the formation of ketones (alkanones).
4
Q
What is the use of alkanones?
A
Alkanones are found in hormones and as antioxidants.
5
Q
What method of forming alkanones involves alkenes?
A
The ozonolysis of alkenes whose carbon atoms carry two alkyl groups.
6
Q
What method of synthesizing alkanones involves alcohols?
A
The oxidation of secondary alcohols with acidified potassium heptodichromate VI
7
Q
How are ketones prepared?
A
- Ozonolysis of alkenes with two alkyl groups in the presence of zinc and water.
- Oxidation of secondary alkanols with potassium heptodichromate VI.
