Chemical Reactions Can Break and Reform New Bonds Flashcards
What are reactants?
Substances that form the new substance, also known as the product.
What are the products?
The new substance that is created by merging other substances known as reactants.
What is the purpose of a chemical equation?
To describe what occurs in chemical reactions.
What does the arrow in a chemical equation represent?
The chemical change.
Give an example of a chemical reaction.
2 Hydrogen Atoms (H2) + 1 Oxygen Atom (O) = Water (H2O)
Can be mixtures be represented by chemical equations? Explain why.
They cannot because they do not actually form any new substance, it hasn’t been chemically bonded.
How do chemical changes take place in our body?
A chemical reaction that occurs is our body takes the food we eat and turns into energy that is used for our cells. This allows the human body to function regularly.
How are chemical changes related to everyday activities?
When we cook and prepare food, we are practicing many chemical and physical changes. For example, cutting raw chicken is a physical change as only the shape as been changed, and cooking raw chicken is a chemical change as the proteins and atoms in it has been altered.
What is chemical weathering?
A process in which rocks are deteriorated due to chemical reactions.
Give an example of chemical weathering?
For example, acid rain caused by gases present in the atmosphere can react with the chemical compounds found in rocks, such as limestone.
